What if we told you there exists a deodorant which is not only free of nasty chemicals and aluminium, but that actually works? Made by a company that is vegan-friendly, promotes sustainability, social and environmental causes? Finally, WooHoo!
Woo Who?
WooHoo Body is an Australian company specialising in highly effective, natural deodorant and personal care products. The company is the brainchild of Aaron and Phoebe Breckell, who founded the company in response to a long search to find a natural, non-irritating deodorant. As it turns out, the couple’s self-admitted obsessions of being health-focused and ‘mix-a-holics’ were put to good use, as they soon developed a formula of their own that was both friendly to sensitive underarms, contained natural ingredients and was effective in fighting stinky body odour.
The company is also proud of their Indigenous heritage, with founders Phoebe and Aaron descendants of the Wailwan, Kamilaroi and Guringai Australian Aboriginal nations. WooHoo products are infused with this culture, both in the unique Australian botanicals as ingredients and also forming the basis of the WooHoo logo itself. The logo dually represents diversity, a core value of the company, whose products are designed to be enjoyed by all peoples, regardless of background, colour, size, shape or personal lifestyle preference.
WooHoo is also big on environmental and social causes. A percentage of proceeds go towards supporting several initiatives, including those that focus on community services, Indigenous charities, planet-friendly and environmental organisations. Even the products themselves are packaged in sustainable, biodegradable and recyclable materials.
(Not) Secret Ingredients
WooHoo products are plant and mineral based and the company works hard to ensure all ingredients are of the highest quality, sourced ethically, and are natural and organic in origin. The company’s products are also cruelty-free, vegan friendly, are not tested on animals and contain no animal derivatives. In fact, they contain none of the following:
- Aluminium salts
- Triclosan
- Propylene glycol
- Artificial colours
- Bleach
- Harsh detergents
- Mineral oils
- Parabens
- Sodium lauryl sulphate
- Sodium laureth sulphate
- Sulphates
- Synthetic fragrances
- Triethanolamine
In terms of shelf-life and effective protection, the company notes that each stick should last you several months and get you through a full day of work or a hard workout, leaving you feeling fresh and free from body odour or chaffing.
Performance In The Wild
We tested three WooHoo products (with special thanks to Sassy Organics); the Tux Extra Strength Deodorant Stick, Tango Sensitive Deodorant Stick and the Wild Extra Strength Deodorant Paste.
Starting with the exterior details, all three come in fun, vibrant containers that are small enough to fit in a pocket, purse or gym bag, making them a handy travel accessory. You’ll find interesting details throughout, such as the hidden message on the inside of the paste-tin. We love that they are made from biodegradable and recyclable materials, true of both the paper-based sticks and metal tin. WooHoo deodorants also have a wonderful, light scent, with pleasant citrus notes across all three products. The Wild paste was the strongest, though it was not overpowering either. During sustained activity the deodorants would seemingly re-activate, as the first thing we noticed during vigorous exercise (e.g. running) was a fresh, fruity smell and thankfully not body odour! All three would also leave a light perfume on clothes at the end of the day, but again this was a welcome benefit to using the products and would easily wash out with no lingering smells noted. Overall, Wild contained a stronger citrus smell (with woody undertones), Tux came in mid-strength and the Tango featured the least noticeable scent.
WooHoo is also kind on sensitive skin and throughout the day there was no chafing or irritation, nothing but long-lasting freshness and a light fragrance.
Turning to feel, the level of comfort when applying all three products did vary. Again, we preferred the Wild paste, as it was easiest to apply and went on very smoothly. The deodorant sticks did tend to pull and drag somewhat on bare skin, however they were better suited if you didn’t want to have to wash your hands after applying the paste, or were just in a rush. That said, it’s better to wait a moment to allow the deodorant to dry, as we did find some slight white marks from the sticks when putting on dark clothing immediately after application. WooHoo is also kind on sensitive skin and throughout the day there was no chafing or irritation, nothing but long-lasting freshness and a light fragrance.
Fortunately, you only need a small amount of each product, meaning they will likely last a long time, despite the compact size. And in the case of the Wild paste, that amount is pea-size, easy enough to scoop out of the tin with your fingers. Speaking of, we found that working the paste in between your index finger and thumb for a moment before applying was the best technique, as it would warm up the paste which would then go on very smooth.
So, how did the WooHoo deodorants fair in the fight against body odour? Quite well actually! We used all three in a variety of contexts, applying once in the morning and never having to re-apply throughout the day, regardless of activity level. This was true for both a long day at the office, hours spent hiking on the weekend and even running sessions. If we had to hazard a guess, you could probably get away with some pretty rigorous exercise without having to re-apply. Not only did using WooHoo leave us feeling fresh, but confident as well, knowing that our pits didn’t smell funky!
Final Verdict
There is a lot to like about WooHoo, beyond the fact that it is a natural deodorant that actually works. The company has made a series of products that are not only great at keeping you feeling fresh throughout the day but taking it one step further by ensuring the products are sustainable and cruelty free. For those seeking a natural alternative to deodorants often contain aluminum and nasty chemicals, give WooHoo a go. You won’t be disappointed. ■
